Technical Info

P. valgus is one of two US species in the genus.

Three genera and four species of the tribe Phileurini can be found in the US:

                                       Phileurus valgus
                                       Phileurus truncatus
                                       Hemiphileurus illatus
                                       Archophileurus cribrosus
Life span: Adults live for approximately
two years. Grubs only take about four
  months to become adults.

Diet: Adults readily eat apple and banana
slices but also need lots of protein, found
easily in dog food or live earth worms.

Notes: Grubs vibrate when disturbed, like
  their larger cousins- Phileurus truncatus.
Adults talk to each other often. Females lay
eggs in middle decayed wood to
high-decayed flake soil. Grubs should be
reared away from the adults, and each other.
If very hungry, adults will sometimes eat
  grubs.
